MINERALS
Tom
Hackney’s recent series of work seems at first glance disparate – a collection
of working processes, media and visual styles. On closer
inspection it is apparent
that these works share an address to
particular structures and logic. In their broadest
interpretation,
such structures include ‘the game of chess’ or ‘the pixelation
of and image’.
Again, under more specific examination we see that
in this case ‘the game of chess’ is
played by Marcel Duchamp, who
famously is said to have abandoned art for chess,
and questions of
art historical stakes are raised. Similarly, ‘the pixelated image’
explored
here is done so through the lens of an iPhone capturing an
image of the face of Ptolemaic
King carved 100years BC; the
pixelation occurring via an automatic face detection and
obfuscation
application. Here, technologies of facial representation meet across
two
thousand years of history, and a new representation of this
encounter is generated.
MINERALS
explores these and other structures across a carefully assembled
series
of objects, images and through the accompanying artist’s
notes.
